Here at Townsend Bearings, we keep a large range of Self Aligning Bearings in both ball and roller (Commonly known as double row spherical roller bearings) types in imperial and metric sizes.
Self Aligning Bearings have two rows of balls or rollers with a sphered raceway in the outer ring. This allows the inner race (in conjunction with the balls) to swivel within the outer race, thus allowing the bearing to self align and take up any angular misalignment due to the positioning of the shaft relative to the housing. This gives the bearings their self aligning properties.
Due to this, Self Aligning Bearings are particularly suitable for applications where misalignment can arise from errors in mounting or shaft deflection. Additionally the Self Aligning Ball Bearing has the lowest friction of all rolling bearings, which enables them to run cool when operating at high speeds.
These bearings are commonly fitted to plummer blocks & can be supplied with either a taper or parallel bore which can then be loaded onto a shaft with a tapered sleeve & locknut.
Self aligning bearings are easy to mount, suit all angular variations and in many cases they have been able to replace special housings.
